ORDINARY TIME II

August 2 - 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time. 1st reading Exodus 16:2-4, 12-15; Psalm 78:3-4, 23-25, 54; 2nd reading Ephesians 4:17, 20-24; Gospel John 6:24-35  Jesus calls us to a new way of life [Eph 4:20] and continues his teaching on the Eucharist pointing out that the manna, the Old Testament Bread from Heaven [Exodus 2:4, Ps 78:24], was the gift of God, not Moses [Jn 6:32] 

August  6 - Transfiguration [Feast]  - 1st reading Daniel 7:9-10, 13-14; Psalm 97:1-2, 5-6, 9; 2nd reading 2 Peter 1:16-19; Gospel Mark 9:2-10  The vision seen by Peter and his companions [Mk 9:2-8; 2 Pt  1:16-19] confirms the prophecies of Jesus Glory [Dn 7:13-14, Ps 97:1-2, 5-6, 9]    [for more see Saints Calendar] 

August 9 - 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time. 1st reading 1 Kings 19:4-8; Psalm 34:2-9; 2nd reading Ephesians 4:30 - 5:2; Gospel John 6:41-51  It is the Lord Who feeds us [Ps 34:8] Jesus sacrifices Himself [Eph 5:2], to be the bread which sustains us [Jn 6:51] as the food from heaven sustained Elijah [1 Kngs 19:6]

August 15 - ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY INTO HEAVEN  [Solemnity]   1st reading Revelation 11:19, 12:1-6, 10; Psalm 45:10-12, 16; 2nd reading 1 Corinthians 15:20-27; Gospel Luke 1:39-56;  With Mary let us praise the Lord [Lk 1:46-55] She has been Assumed to heaven [Rev 11:19] to sit with her Son [Ps 45:10] in the home prepared for us her children [1 Cor 15:23]  [for more see Saints Calendar] 

 

August 16- 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time. 1st reading Proverbs 9:1-6; Psalm 34:2-3, 10-15; 2nd reading Ephesians 5:15-20; Gospel John 6:51-58  As Wisdom offers bread and wine [Prv 9:5] Jesus gives us His Flesh and Blood [Jn 6:55] and gives us life [Ps 34:12]  This is the wine of the Spirit, not of dissipation [Eph 5:18]  

August 23 - 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time. 1st reading Joshua 24:1-2, 15-18; Psalm 34:2-3, 16-21; 2nd reading Ephesians 5:21-32; Gospel John 6:60-69  Jesus asks us to choose, as Joshua asked the Israelites [Josh 24:15], will we accept the Eucharist [Jn 6:67] and proclaim His Name [Ps 34:3] as members of His Body [Eph 5:31]

August 30 - 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time. 1st reading Deuteronomy 4:1-2, 6-8; Psalm 15:2-5; 2nd reading James 1:17-18, 21-22, 27; Gospel Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23  We must keep God’s Laws [Deut 4:2] by being pure inside [Mk 7:21, Ps 15:2] with God’s Word planted in our hearts [Jas 1:21]
