October 5 - Saint Faustina Helena Kowalska was born in the village of Glogowiec west of Lodz, Poland, on August 25, 1905. When she was almost twenty, she entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy, whose members devote themselves to the care and education of troubled young women. The message of mercy that Saint Faustina received is now being spread throughout the world. For more see web link |

October 7 - Our Lady of the Rosary [once called Our Lady of Victory] commemorates the great naval victory of Don Juan of Austria over the Turks at Lepanto on October 7, 1571 This victory was attributed to the faithful recitation of the Rosary by great numbers of Catholics. October 17 - Saint Ignatius of Antioch (Martyred 107) Saint Ignatius was an Early Father of the Church; As a disciple of Saint John the Evangelist, he is an important link to the apostolic times. When thrown to the lions he stated “May I become agreeable bread to the Lord” For more see web link |

October 19 - Saints Isaac Jogues, John deBrebeuf and Companions - (Martyred 1642-49) These 8 French Jesuits are the North American Martyrs: Saint Isaac Jogues ws captured and tortured by Iroquois in 1642, was freed by the Dutch, but returned and was killed in 1648; They are honored at a shrine in Auriesville NY, shared by Katerei Takewitha [July 14], and a second shrine in Canada For more see Saint Isaac and Saint John |

October 23 - Saint John of Capistrano - (1385-1456) Patron of Jurists; A lawyer in court of Naples and governor of Perugia, Saint John was imprisoned in local war; upon his release he joined the Franciscans; He travelled throughout Italy, Germany, Bohemia, Austria, Hungary, Poland & Russia preaching and establishing renewed Franciscan communities; He led a crusade to victory at battle of Belgrade (1456) to save Vienna and Rome For more see web link |

October 28 - SaintS SIMON and JUDE [Feast] - Apostles; Saint Simon is referred to as the Canaanean or Zealot to distinguish him from Simon Peter; It is thought that he was martyred in Persia; Saint Jude (Thaddaeus) was the brother of James the Less and Simeon who became bishop of Jerusalem in 62; He wrote a short, Catholic [I.e. to the whole Church] Epistle, It is thought that he was martyred in Armenia; He must be distinguished from Judas Iscariot, and is frequently overlooked, therefore is the Patron of Desperate Cases. |
